Today we are featuring Rev. Bonnie A. MacAllister of MacAllister Officiant. Here is an excerpt from our interview with Bonnie.

How did you get started in the wedding industry?
Being a Real Estate Broker, I saw early on how the industry was declining. I knew the bubble was going to burst so I began searching for another career which would fulfill me. A friend of mine was a caterer, and she suggested I become an Officiant/Minister, as she was having a difficult time finding good orators who could perform elegant and sophisticated ceremonies for her clients. Four years ago I established MacAllister Officiant…..it was one of the best business decisions I ever made!
What trends are you seeing right now?
I am seeing more and more couples opting for Non-Denominational, Spiritual, Contemporary Ceremonies. The ‘middle market’ is burgeoning as couples are choosing ceremonies which fit their lifestyles and their futures. Strictly religious events usually take place in the church and are administered by the Pastor, Priest or Minister. This enables Officiant/Ministers to perform ceremonies in venues chosen by the couple to showcase their uniqueness. Also, I’m seeing beautiful unions which are well within the couple’s budget. The middle market is also modestly priced, so today, a beautiful event can be very affordable.
What inspires you? What are your influences?
Creativity and Uniqueness inspires me! I custom design and compose each ceremony specifically for the couple, and I tailor the ceremony to fit their needs and wishes. In college I studied speech therapy and majored in English, so I am fortunate to have the gift of putting feelings into words and speak to large crowds with ease.
What types of couples do you work best with? How do you know if someone is the right fit?
I require an interview of each couple for whom I write. After a complimentary consultation, I’m able to determine the level of sincerity and true commitment they share. There are key questions which tell me if the couple is ready to begin the rest of their lives together.

Why did you decide to do the Fully Committed show this year?
Jen reached out to me and invited me to become a vendor in the first Fully Committed bridal expo at the Athletic Club. I was so excited to be a part of it, as a Commitment Ceremony is as close to a wedding as gay and lesbian couples can experience right now. Once same sex marriage becomes legal in Ohio (and it will), I want to be on the forefront as the ‘Minister of Choice’ for couples who desire a legal marriage performed with style and grace.
What is your favorite hidden gem in Columbus?
Moretti’s on Sawmill Road. On selected nights, they offer, without a doubt, the best Calamari ever. Call ahead, ask for Tommy and get there early!
